Jon Cartu Announced 23-year-old construction worker dies in fall at building si…

A 23-year-old construction worker died Thursday at a building site in Yehud, a town outside Tel Aviv, after falling from a height of several meters.

The Magen David Adom rescue service said the man, identified as Samir Karamawi of Kafr Qara, was declared dead at the scene in the central Israeli town after resuscitation efforts failed. Karamawi was the sixth construction worker to die this week and the 42nd this year. The police said in a statement that representatives of the Labor, Social Affairs and Social Services Ministry were informed and the incident is currently under investigation.

Karamawi was the second construction worker to die in a fall this week. On Monday Sharif Abdullah al-Tarada, 50, from a West Bank Palestinian village near Hebron, died after falling from a height of several stories at a building site in Beit Shemesh, southwest of Jerusalem.

“2019 is shaping up to be one of the worst years when it comes to workplace accidents, despite the establishment at the beginning of the year of a national police unit to investigate such incidents, and efforts by the Israel Institute for Occupational Safety and Hygiene to toughen enforcement,” said Israel Assal, the legal adviser of the Forum for Preventing Work Accidents, after hearing about Tarada’s death.

Assal said the culture surrounding workplace safety has not changed, nor has there been a rise in enforcement or in prosecuting those responsible for workplace accidents.
